The New York Giants were finally able to agree to terms with wide receiver Victor Cruz locking up the team’s best wideout to a five-year contract extension according to Tom Pelissero of USA Today:
The New York Giants agreed to terms on Monday with their top receiver on a five-year extension, two people with knowledge of the negotiations told USA TODAY Sports.
Although the immediate future of Cruz with the Giants was uncertain to say the least, New York was still able to convince the young wideout to stick around. Eli Manning and company are coming off a disappointing season finishing third in the NFC East division standings behind the Dallas Cowboys and division champion Washington Redskins.
Cruz will earn $15.6 million guaranteed over the course of his extension with the Giants and a total of $43 million via Pelissero:
One of the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been announced, said the contract is worth $43 million over five years on top of the $2.879 million restricted free-agent tender Cruz signed on June 14 — so a total of $45.879 million over six years through the 2018 season, with $15.6 million guaranteed.
With the Redskins turning into a force to be reckoned with and the Cowboys as talented as any team in the NFL, the Giants will be challenged moving forward. Retaining Cruz is crucial to the team’s success on offense with Manning’s favorite target back in the mix in New York.
It’ll be interesting to see whether or not Cruz will make a considerable difference to the team’s chances of competing within the division or in the NFC for that matter.
