In two weeks training camp begins for the Jets and the quarterback competition between Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith will surely make headlines.
After Smith decided to skip Sanchez’s annual Jets West passing camp in Mission Viejo, it appears the competition would be heightened, but Sanchez quickly dismissed the notion:
“I don’t hold it against any of the guys that can’t make it,” Sanchez said Friday after workouts at his old high school in Southern California. “I

Greg (McElroy’s) not here. (Matt) Simms isn’t here. Guys are on vacation. Some guys are going and getting married. They’re doing stuff. There’s plenty of other things that they could be doing.”
Instead of joining his 12 teammates in Mission Viejo, Smith has decided to work out in Florida. Konrad Reuland believes that Smith would have benefited from spending time with his teammates and building chemistry. While Smith’s absence won’t put him behind the competition, Sanchez believes he has the advantage and will win the quarterback competition against the rookie:
“When it comes down to a competition, I just put my money on myself,” Sanchez said. “And bet on myself and go play and go win the job. So if that’s what it’s going to be like it’s been clear that’s what it is, alright let’s go.”
With Sanchez fighting for his future in a Jets uniform, he faces stiff competition from the rookie and hopes that it won’t be a close fight to the finish.
This past season, Sanchez was benched in favor of third string back-up, Greg McElroy against the
Arizona Cardinals where he threw three interceptions. While he returned as a starter, Sanchez struggled for the remainder of the season and the team failed to make the playoffs.
