NFL News: Eagles’ Michael Vick Calls Players-Only Meeting

USATSI_7957321_154224518_lowresComing into Week 9’s matchup with the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football, the Philadelphia Eagles will be facing some serious challenges with a potential change at the quarterback position with a loss of poor showing from Michael Vick.

Although head coach Andy Reid has publicly stated that Vick is his starter under center moving forward, that may quickly change if the four-time Pro Bowler continues to struggle. With 13 turnovers on the season, Vick isn’t far behind the leaders at the quarterback position in that category sits behind the Kansas City Chiefs Matt Cassel (16) and Tony Romo (15) of the Dallas Cowboys.

Fortunately for Philadelphia, Vick appears to be confident and motivated headed into Week 9 with the superstar gunslinger calling a players-only meeting on Wednesday to make sure everyone is on the same page with the same goal according to ESPN.com:

“Michael Vick, secure as the Eagles’ starting quarterback this week after receiving a public endorsement from coach Andy Reid, called a players-only meeting Wednesday, with the team on a three-game losing streak.

“About 10 players, including Vick, spoke at the meeting. The message: There was still time for the Eagles (3-4) to salvage the season.”

Although the Eagles head into this showdown with the Saints supporting an ugly three-game losing streak, Vick will have an ideal situation ahead of him by facing arguably the worst defense in the NFL.

Monday night’s game will be played at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans with Drew Brees and company desperately seeking a win after losing five of the first seven games of the season. Brees continues to play at a high level with an NFL-best 316 passing yards per game, but the defense continues to let the future Hall of Famer down by failing to hold leads on a weekly basis.

With the Saints struggling to contain opposing offenses giving up 300+ yards through the air and more than 170 yards on the ground per contest, Vick has a potentially huge night ahead of him. As long as the Eagles’ leader under center can hold onto the football and avoid interceptions, there’s a good chance Vick will put up some solid numbers while leading Philadelphia to a fourth win on the season.
