USATSI_8389597_154224518_lowresWith a return to the field looking more and more unlikely, the Detroit Lions have released former first round pick running back Jahvid Best.

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew had nothing but positive things about Best:

Jahvid is as fine a person and professional as I have ever worked with. He was the consummate teammate and always did everything asked of him. We wish Jahvid the very best in all his future endeavors and have no doubt that he will be successful in whatever path he chooses.

Best, the 30th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, accounted for over 1,000 yards and six touchdowns in his rookie season and seemed to be an essential part to the Lions’ rebuilding efforts. But he was limited to only six games in 2011 and did not play at all in 2012 after suffering a concussion.

With the additions of free agent running back Reggie Bush and sixth round pick Theo Riddick to the depth chart, it was no longer necessary to keep Best in the fold.

Best also released a statement regarding his release:

I want to thank the Detroit Lions organization for drafting me and giving me an opportunity to fulfill my dream and play in the National Football League. My time as a member of the Lions was a very special time in my life. My teammates, the members of the organization, the Lions fans and the people of Detroit will hold a special place in my heart. I’ll always be a Lion.

The Lions are attempting to get back to the playoffs after a very disappointing 4-12 season in which they lost the final eight games of the season. However nine of their 12 losses were by eight points or less.

The also recently gave quarterback Matthew Stafford a three year, $53 million and with him and superstar wide receiver Calvin Johnson back together, the Lions will be a team to watch this season.
