After the historic signings of quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Joe Flacco, the Detroit Lions are prepared to make Matthew Stafford a very rich man.
Reportedly, the Lions are on the verge of inking Stafford to a lucrative contract extension according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter via Twitter:
Lions and QB Matthew Stafford are on verge of blockbuster extension that could be done as early as today, per team source.

Once Flacco was inked to a new deal, the Green Bay Packers were the next team to make history signing Aaron Rodgers to a new deal worth $110 million over the next five years. Rodgers deal is potentially worth over $130.75 million over the course of the deal.
Early reports have Stafford inking a three-year contract extension worth $53 million. Stafford will make $43 million guaranteed according to Pro Football Talk via Twitter:
Total value of three-year extension for Stafford will be $53 million, putting five-year haul at $76.5 million. $43 million guaranteed.

Stafford’s new deal will give the team about $7 million in cap space over the next two years.
It remains to be seen whether or not Stafford will be able to live up to the new deal, but the Lions clearly don’t have a better option at this point and are hoping for the best after locking up the quarterback for the next five years.
