Two years before becoming teammates on the New England Patriots, Tom Brady and Tim Tebow had one thing in common. Other than being NFL quarterbacks that is. According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, Brady, and Tebow were concerned about Aaron Hernandez two years prior to his arrest.
“I’m trying to watch over Aaron and Brandon,” Brady says to Tebow in an NFL Films video, via the Orlando Sentinel.
Brady, and Tebow both know Hernandez personality well. Tebow and Hernandez were teammates together at the University of Florida. Since leaving Florida, Brady and Hernandez have made way for one of the best quarterback-tight end duos in the league.
Hernandez, who was released by the Patriots on June 26 shortly after he was arrested and charged with first degree murder. Last week Patriots longtime owner Robert Kraft came out and said the Patriots were “duped” by Hernandez actions and what had transpired.
While Brady could have never predicted what took place last month, he did have his concerns when it came to his teammate back in 2011. Many close to Hernandez including his teammates were concerned about the group of people Hernandez was spending time with. The Patriots coaching staff even asked Hernandez to distance himself from his group of friends. That conversation, however, did not go smoothly.
As Ben Volin of the Boston Globe pointed out earlier this month, Hernandez bristled when Patriots coaches and employees asked him to break free from his friends in Connecticut.
The Patriots evidently felt that they could keep Hernandez under control, and eventually gave him a new contract with a $12.5 million dollar signing bonus. So even though the Patriots were “duped” by Hernandez according to Kraft, they must have seen signs that Hernandez could go back to his old roots at anytime.
