With Clay Matthews testing the waters of free agency, it appears the Los Angeles Rams may be among the notable teams interested in acquiring his services.
It is no secret the Rams have a number of voids to fill on the roster, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. A few areas of focus for the front office will likely be linebackers and pass rushers.
This is much more difficult to do considering what little cap space Los Angeles has left to spend this offseason. Fortunately, they may have a potential option in Clay Matthews.
According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Rams are interested in signing Matthews:
The Rams are a prime landing spot for veterans, especially those who live in California. They have interest in Clay Matthews… as do a host of others.
The Rams have already lost a number of key players from last year’s team to free agency. Despite their recent turnover, they have managed to somewhat weather the storm by bringing in Eric Weddle and re-signing Dante Fowler Jr. for the 2019 NFL season.
There is no question that Matthews is hardly the player he used to be after coming off a bit of a down year in which he only registered 3.5 sacks and 43 tackles all season. This could be why Green Bay has been hesitant to sign him right off the bat.
Although he is in the final stretch of his career, this could ultimately benefit Los Angeles in the long run. Matthews can help stabilize the Rams linebacker corps and his price tag should ultimately prove not to be too steep for the Rams to handle.
The signing would be a bit of a homecoming for Matthews. It is safe to say he would be enamored with the prospect of potentially returning to his native Southern California to play in the Coliseum like he did at USC.
