NFL Free Agency Rumors: Rams A ‘Dark Horse’ To Sign Tyrann Mathieu

The Los Angeles Rams have made several splashes over the past year, trading for Matthew Stafford and Von Miller, and signing Odell Beckham Jr. after he was released by the Cleveland Browns.

All three moves were instrumental in the team defeating the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI. With a championship now secured, the Rams have continued to load up on elite talent this offseason.

L.A. signed Allen Robinson and Bobby Wagner — two of the top free agents at their respective positions — and still have enough flexibility to add another difference maker if the opportunity presents itself.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Rams could be a sleeper team to sign four-time Pro Bowl safety Tyrann Mathieu:

A dark horse? Most definitely. But don’t be shocked if the #Rams make a run at 4x All-Pro Tyrann Mathieu.

Les Snead has $7M of cap to work with and — as another GM told me: “They can get creative again. That’s just what they do. We’ve already seen it with [Bobby] Wagner.”

Mathieu is coming off another strong season with the Kansas City Chiefs in which he recorded 76 tackles, one sack, three touchdowns and six passes defensed (16 games).

The 31-year-old is one of the best ball-hawking safeties in the NFL, but his market has been limited so far, taking visits with only the New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles.

Mathieu would give the Rams a solid veteran to pair with Taylor Rapp and Jordan Fuller at safety. He can also play the slot cornerback position, which would help compensate for the loss of Darious Williams and allow Jalen Ramsey and David Long Jr. to move around the field.

Mathieu is likely seeking more than the $7 million the Rams can offer him, so they will likely have to restructure other contracts to fit him under the salary cap.
