The Los Angeles Rams announced that they have signed quarterback John Wolford, who most recently played for the Arizona Hotshots in the Alliance of American Football. The terms of the contract were not released.

Wolford is coming off a strong season with the Hotshots, throwing for 1,617 passing yards and a league-leading 14 touchdowns in six games.

He played his college ball at Wake Forest and earned second-team All-ACC honors in his last season. He became the first FBS player since 2000 to pass for at least 400 yards, rush for at least 65 yards, and throw no interceptions in a bowl game in the Belk Bowl as a senior.

After going undrafted in 2018, Wolford was signed by the Jets and played in just one preseason game.

Wolford becomes the second quarterback that the Rams signed this offseason after they inked former Jacksonville Jaguars starter Blake Bortles to a one-year deal. He is expected to be Jared Goff’s primary backup this season after Sean Mannion departed to sign with the Minnesota Vikings.

In recent years, the Rams have not carried three quarterbacks on their roster but Wolford could earn a spot on the practice squad if he performs well this preseason.
