With All-Pro safety Eric Weddle set to hit the market as a free agent, it appears the Los Angeles Rams have wasted no time in expressing their interest. After a meeting with the Rams and the Rams only, Weddle has agreed to a two-year contract with the team.
It is no secret that the Rams have a number of voids to fill on the defensive side of the ball this offseason. Los Angeles was expected to be in dire need of some safety help with the looming departure of Lamarcus Joyner, who has since signed with the Oakland Raiders.
The Baltimore Ravens made headlines when they decided to part ways with Weddle ahead of free agency, and instead of retiring, Weddle has decided to come to Los Angeles.
Despite his age, Weddle can still be considered a solid upgrade from Joyner. The 34-year-old is coming off his third consecutive Pro Bowl year with the Ravens after finishing the 2018 campaign 68 tackles, three pass defenses, and a sack. 2018 did mark his first year since 2015 without an interception, however.
Weddle’s presence over the top will undoubtedly serve as a stabilizing factor in the Rams’ secondary. Not to mention, his experience should help with the emergence of John Johnson as well.
It is safe to say that Weddle is happy to return to his native Southern California. The prospect of potentially winning a Super Bowl with the Rams before ending his career was too good for him to pass up.
