With the 2020 NFL Draft just around the corner, teams around the league are gearing up to select players that can hopefully contribute for them during the 2020 NFL season. For some teams, the draft is an opportunity to rebuild their roster with young talent while others will use it to shore up any weaknesses and increase their odds of a Super Bowl run.
The Los Angeles Rams are in a precarious spot as they need depth at several positions after mortgaging part of their future in favor of win-now moves that unfortunately did not pan out. Les Snead has been one of the more aggressive general managers in recent years as he has traded high draft picks for star players who can help immediately.
Los Angeles currently owns six picks in the upcoming draft, meaning that they will need to be especially careful with who they take given the scarcity of selections. According to Matt Miller of Bleacher Report, it appears as though they will be looking to address running back and offensive tackle early:
The Rams are limited on early-round selections after trading for established NFL starters like Jalen Ramsey, but the team has needs. Sources expect a running back early and an offensive tackle to potentially be the priority in Round 2 if one is on the board.
Even with Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown still on the team, the need for running back is an obvious one after Todd Gurley was cut last month. Also, offensive tackle makes sense as a position to target as the poor offensive line play in the 2019 NFL season hindered Jared Goff and the offense tremendously.
This draft is wide receiver heavy which means quality players at both positions mentioned are sure to drop, so it will be interesting to see if Snead decides to trade back to accumulate additional picks. Los Angeles does have a couple of third-round selections (Nos. 84 and 104 overall), so a possible move could be to grab a running back with one and move out of the other to add more draft capital.
With a move to SoFi Stadium on the docket, properly tackling the draft and coming away with value and impact players will be of the utmost importance for the Rams. Limited cap space made them relatively quiet in free agency, so this will be their best chance to retool the team and hopefully get back in the postseason.
