The Los Angeles Rams had the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles on the ropes in Week 3, leading 26-7 early in the second half on the road.
Unfortunately, they weren’t able to put them away as a series of mistakes led to a 33-26 comeback victory for the Eagles, handing the Rams their first loss of the young season.
The Rams had multiple chances to extend their lead and put the game away but struggled in the red zone. They then had two field goals blocked in the fourth quarter, including what would have been the game-winner as time expired after Matthew Stafford led his team down the field and into range.
It’s a tough loss for the Rams to swallow, especially considering they had this game circled on their calendar after losing in Philadelphia in the playoffs last year.
After the loss, Stafford discussed the mentality he wants his team to take moving forward.
“Learn from it. There’s so many other plays in this game that we can learn from and be better,” Stafford told reporters postgame. “First and foremost, myself. Disappointed with how I threw it in some instances today. Just go back to it, continue to work hard and know that what you’re doing and the process that we’re doing is the right thing and find ways to win games.”
Stafford added that he is not concerned about how the Rams will respond when they take the field next in Week 4 at home against the Indianapolis Colts.
“I’ve got no questions or no concerns about how we’ll respond,” he said. “Bunch of guys that care about each other, care about doing stuff the right way, understand that our process – you know, trust that process that we have week in and week out going to work. Come with the same mindset, whether we won this game or lost this game. Got another one next week, big-time opponent and got to be ready to go.”
Stafford didn’t have his best game, missing some throws in the first half that could have extended L.A.’s lead. He still finished with two touchdowns, one interception and 196 passing yards while leading what would have been the game-winning drive if not for the blocked kick.
At 2-1, the Rams are still in a good position moving forward, although Stafford is right that they need to learn from the loss and move on so it doesn’t affect them in Week 4 and beyond.
