As is normally the case, Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay saw a number of members of his coaching staff poached after another successful season.
The biggest loss was offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, who accepted the head coaching job of the Minnesota Vikings after being McVay’s right-hand man the last two seasons.
McVay wasted no time in finding a replacement though as although the move has not been announced, Liam Coen is expected to take over as offensive coordinator. Coen was with the Rams from 2018-2020, first as the assistant wide receivers coach and then as the assistant quarterback coach.
He took a college job as the offensive coordinator at Kentucky last season before now returning to the NFL.
In a statement, Coen expressed excitement to be returning to the Rams to work under McVay once again, via BBN Tonight:
“The opportunity presented by Sean and the Rams to rejoin their organization was one that my family and I just could not pass up,” he said in a statement. “It would not have been at all possible without this year spent in Lexington with Coach Stoops, the staff/players and of course BBN.”
With McVay losing key members of his coaching staff on a yearly basis, bringing in someone like Coen who is already familiar with his system is a smart move.
Returning is also a smart move for Coen as he could put himself in position for a head coaching job, as so many other McVay assistants have over the last few years.
Now that it is official that McVay himself is coming back and his staff is coming into place, the focus can shift to the personnel side with free agency just around the corner.
