It was pretty surprising when Los Angeles Rams head coach Jeff Fisher announced that top overall pick Jared Goff would be the team’s number 3 quarterback and wouldn’t dress in the season opener.

Fisher did always say that he could alternate Goff and Sean Mannion as the team’s second and third QBs and that looks to be exactly what’s happening.

According to Rams Insider Myles Simmons, Fisher announced that Goff would indeed be the team’s backup QB in the home opener against the Seattle Seahawks:

With calls for Keenum to be benched by fans already happening in some circles, this will make for an interesting atmosphere should the Rams struggle early on against the Seahawks. In the minds of many, the Rams should play Goff and allow him to grow with his team, especially if they continue to be as bad as they showed in Week 1.

In an ideal world Keenum can improve on his Week 1 performance and the Rams will rally behind him, but there are some in the organization who reportedly believe Goff gives the team the best chance to win. It remains to be seen if Goff will see time on the field, but now we know it’s a possibility.
