Los Angeles Rams football returned on Saturday night as they hosted the Dallas Cowboys at SoFi Stadium in their first game of the preseason.

As is normally the case, Sean McVay elected to sit out all of his starters, giving young players and players battling for roster spots a chance to show that they can do.

Overall, it was a performance that McVay and the coaching staff have to be happy with as the Rams jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, beating the Cowboys, 31-21.

Stetson Bennett got the start at quarterback for the Rams and played a majority of the game, appearing to make strides in a variety of areas. Bennett looked good throwing on the run and avoiding turnover-worthy plays. He wound up completing 16 of 24 passes for 188 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

On the Rams’ first drive, they went for it on fourth down and Bennett found Xavier Smith, who made a ridiculous catch down the sidelines. Smith, who was the Rams’ primary punt returner last season, is battling for time at receiver and made a nice impression with three catches for 55 yards.

A large chunk of the Rams’ offense came on the ground and that started with Blake Corum, who rushed for 32 yards on nine carries and scored two touchdowns on each of the Rams’ first two drives. Similar to Kyren Williams, Corum had shown to be a touchdown machine during his time in college.

This game was the Rams’ first look at rookie third-round Jarquez Hunter and he ran hard, finishing with 11 carries for 41 yards. Cody Schrader also had an impressive showing to cap off the night with five carries for 59 yards and a receiving touchdown. Brennan Presley then caught L.A.’s final touchdown of the night.

The Rams’ defense also impressed in this one as the Cowboys did not find the end zone until the game was out of reach in the fourth quarter. Rookie outside linebacker Josaiah Stewart made his presence felt with a sack, and then Cam Lampkin had an interception late in the end zone to cap off the victory.

Coming off a strong week of joint practices with the Cowboys, the Rams carried it over to the game and kicked off the preseason on a high note.

What’s next for the Rams

The Rams will be back at SoFi Stadium next week for their second preseason game, taking on the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday at 4 p.m. PT. As always, the game will be televised on ABC 7.
