After making the postseason in 2023, the Los Angeles Rams walked into the offseason with plenty of cap space for the first time in years.
Under head coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead, the Rams have been aggressive chasing star players in deals and signing them to long-term deals that tie up most of their money. However, this time around, Los Angeles had money to spend on free agents that can help prop the team up on both sides of the field.
The secondary was a huge need for the Rams as Ahkello Witherspoon and Jordan Fuller became free agents. Despite the young talent on the roster, McVay and Snead knew they needed to bring in more established talent to beef up their pass defense.
In a surprising move, Los Angeles was able to sign Darious Williams to a three-year deal. Williams previously played for the organization and called the city home now that he is returning, via Stu Jackson of TheRams.com:
“Man, this place is the exact same,” Williams said. “The good thing about it is, this is my football home. Obviously I just came from Jacksonville, that’s where I’m from, but L.A. is football home.”
Williams explained that his decision to come back was partially driven by the coaches and players who are still around from his first stint:
“I mean, it’s just home,” Williams said. “You could say coaching staff, you could say new players, but L.A., they know how to win here, how to get the job done, so just excited to come back.”
While former defensive coordinator Raheem Morris is now with the Atlanta Falcons, Williams spent time with current Rams DC Chris Shula and knows McVay well. While the defense is comprised of mostly new faces for Williams, the veteran cornerback should walk into a starting role at cornerback though Shula will likely move him around the formation because of his versatility to play inside.
Williams was a part of the Super Bowl LVI roster where he played a large part in their title run and it’ll be fun to see what he can do in his second go around with the team.
Tre’Davious White explains why Rams were good fit for him in free agency
Joining Williams in the defensive backs’ room is Tre’Davious White, who signed a one-year deal with L.A. White explained that the Rams were the best fit for him in free agency because of their medical staff’s experience with rehabbing an Achilles injury plus his rapport with members in the organization.
