Despite the massive backlash received over the NFL’s handling of the Ray Rice domestic abuse case, incidents continue to pop up. The latest comes from Dallas where Cowboys special teams player C.J. Spillman is involved with an investigation of sexual assault that took place at the Cowboys team hotel. The incident apparently took place on September 20, one day before the Cowboys game against the St. Louis Rams
As reported by the NY Daily News, civil rights attorney Gloria Allred sent a letter to Commissioner Roger Goodell claiming Spillman met with police, while accompanied by a team official, and was then allowed to play the next day:
Thereafter, the accused was then allowed by his team to play the following day. We have asked the NFL whether or not this alleged rape was reported to them and if they approved this accused individual’s playing in the game notwithstanding the allegations that had been made against him.
The NFL just can’t seem to catch a break these days as incidents continue to pile up early in this season. Much like the Ray Rice incident and the Baltimore Ravens, there are sure to be questions regarding how much the team knew beforehand and whether or not they chose to take action.
With Spillman being a special teams player who has yet to take the field on defense, it wouldn’t seem to make sense for the Cowboys to risk so much by ignoring this. Needless to say, itt will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
