The Kansas City Chiefs don’t have much on offense outside of star running back Jamaal Charles. Now they will be without their best wide receiver on opening weekend as well.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Bowe will be suspended for the Chiefs first regular season game:
Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe is being suspended one game for substance abuse and will miss the opener vs. Tennessee, per a team source.

Bowe was arrested for possession of marijuana, but pleaded guilty to lesser charges. The passenger with Bowe said that the marijuana was his, and Bowe was unaware that it was in his car.
After finishing last season with an 11-5 record and a playoff berth, the Chiefs are looking to build on last season’s success, but that may prove difficult to do.
Unfortunately for Bowe, this suspension could possibly spell the end of his time in Kansas City as Pro Football Talk explains that this could give the Chiefs a window to cut him:
The suspension most likely voids the remaining fully guaranteed money in Bowe’s contract: $8.75 million in 2014 and $1.5 million in 2015. It creates a window for the Chiefs to dump Bowe, avoiding more than $10 million and creating an immediate $8.75 million in 2014 cap space.
Even though Bowe has led the Chiefs in receiving every year since he’s entered the league, he has never taken the next step to become a dominant receiver in the mold of Calvin Johnson, Dez Bryant, or A.J. Green. The Chiefs may want to get away from his contract and they now have the chance to do so.
