Lost in the greatness of Jamaal Charles last season, was an absolutely excellent season by quarterback Alex Smith. Charles has already received his extension with the Kansas City Chiefs, and now Smith does as well according to Pro Football Talk:
After an intense and largely secretive day of negotiations, the Chiefs and Smith have worked out a four-year, $68 million extension. Per a league source, Smith gets $30 million guaranteed at signing. Another $15 million in injury-only guarantee vests in March 2015.
Smith was on the verge of being considered a major bust as the top pick in the 2005 draft. He struggled through a number of coach and coordinator changes before Jim Harbaugh came in 2011, resurrecting his career.
An injury forced Smith to the bench while Colin Kaepernick came in and brought a new dimension to the team, keeping Smith on the bench even when he was healthy. The Chiefs traded for him before last season and Smith had the best season of his career, completing 60 percent of his passes for 3,313 yards, 23 touchdowns, and only seven interceptions.
Smith will have his work cut out for his as many are skeptical of the Chiefs improving on their 11-5 season. They made no notable additions to the offense, particularly at wide receiver where Dexter McCluster left in free agency, and Dwayne Bowe is suspended for the first game of the season.
In a division with two other playoff teams, Smith will definitely have the chance to earn the money he is recieving.
