The Los Angeles Rams’ first preseason game was a successful one as they pulled off a close victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

The Rams edged out the Cowboys 13-12 and now take on the Los Angeles Chargers at 4:30 p.m. PT on ABC, giving the team another opportunity to evaluate its roster and players. As is normally the case, head coach Sean McVay will keep his starters and rotation players out of the game which means extended run for players like Stetson Bennett and Jordan Whittington, who shined in preseason week 1.

For the Chargers, they will be looking to bounce back after losing to the Seattle Seahawks in their first preseason game. The Chargers are in the midst of a remodel year after parting ways with several of their high-priced veterans, but do have a new head coach in Jim Harbaugh who most expect to turn the franchise around.

The two teams faced off in preseason last year, with the Chargers taking home a 34-17 victory. The Rams, though, are a much better squad this time around and should have another strong outing.

It’s also worth noting that Aubrey Pleasant will serve as the Rams’ head coach in this game with Sean McVay up in the booth.

Rams Offense vs. Chargers Defense

Bennett looked shaky in his first start of the preseason, throwing four interceptions though he did convert a pass for the game-winning touchdown. With more reps under his belt, Bennett should have a better performance. On the flipside, Whittington figures to dominate targets again after a strong debut.

Boston Scott and Zach Evans got all the Rams’ backfield snaps, with the former being more efficient. It’s unlikely McVay activates Blake Corum or Ronnie Rivers, so the two should be in for sizable workloads.

The Chargers defense may have given up 16 points to the Seahawks, but they were working in short field situations. The unit as a whole recorded three sacks and seven tackles for loss, so Bennett could find himself scrambling out of pressure often.

Rams Defense vs. Chargers Offense

Tyler Davis stood out for the Rams defense, recording six tackles including one for loss. He generated consistent pressure on the interior and will be a key piece to watch. The secondary as a whole also did well to limit explosives and should do well against the Chargers.

Meanwhile, the Chargers struggled to get anything going offensively and are in line for another tough day.

Rams Keys to Victory

1. Limit turnovers

Bennett needs to take better care of the football against a Chargers team that has its share of offensive woes. If Bennett can keep the offense moving, the Rams should take home the win.

2. Clog up the Chargers’ run game

The Chargers did see some chunk yardage with their running game, and knowing Harbaugh he likes to lean on his running backs. Ensuring the Chargers don’t eat up clock with their runs will be a key thing to watch out for if the Rams are gonna come away with a win.
