The Chicago Bears are currently going through another transitional period with the team starting over with new head coach Marc Trestman. Chicago failed to capitalize on another hot start to the season finishing with a 10-6 record and missing the playoffs.
Although the season ended in disappointing fashion, the Bears intend to keep quarterback Jay Culter under center in Chicago for at least one season.
Cutler is entering the last year of his deal with the Bears and will be in discussions with the team about a new deal over the course of the season, but the veteran gunslinger says it won’t be a distraction via ESPNChicago.com:
“That stuff takes care of itself. As long as we’re winning football games and I’m playing well, hopefully they keep me around. If that doesn’t happen, we’ll see how it plays out. I’m not going to be distracted by it. I can’t worry about it. I’ve been in this league long enough. I’ve seen guys come and guys go. It will work out the way it’s supposed to work out.”
Cutler stands to benefit more than most from the hiring of Trestman. The Bears wanted to go in a new direction with an emphasis on the offensive side of the football after parting ways with Lovie Smith and Trestman was hired to make the change.
Although Cutler has been statistically the best quarterback in the team’s history, the veteran has struggled over the past few years with a tendency to turn the ball over. The addition of wide receiver Brandon Marshall was a step in the right direction for the team last season, but was enough of a game-changer to propel the Bears into the playoffs.
Next season will be telling in terms of Cutler’s long-term future in Chicago and his future as a starter in the NFL. If Cutler struggles next season, the team may simply part ways with the veteran rather than signing him to a long-term deal.
