Before last season, the Chicago Bears decided to bring in veteran wide receiver Brandon Marshall in a trade with the Miami Dolphins. The addition of Marshall was to help drastically improve the offense with former Denver Broncos teammate Jay Cutler under center in Chicago.

Ultimately, adding Marshall turned out to be the right move. Cutler and Marshall got back on the same page and the Bears were that much more dynamic offensively, but it didn’t result in a return to the NFL playoffs with the team finishing at 10-6.

Although Marshall had a career year and will be considered among the top tier wideouts in the league next season, the veteran underwent hip surgery shortly after the season. Marshall became the focal point of the offense in Chicago and as a result became the focal point of opposing defenses.

With the Bears signing tight end Martellus Bennett in free agency, Marshall is hoping he’ll help shoulder offensive load in the passing game via ESPNChicago.com:

“I am (looking forward to having more weapons),” Marshall told ESPN Chicago’s Sarah Spain while attending the ESPYs. “It was tough sledding last year. I think that’s why I had to have the surgery. I had 2-3 guys on me every single play, but bringing in big boy Martellus, I don’t think the league really knows how good he is. I didn’t know, and that was one of my great friends in the league. So I’m excited to see him, he’s going to be awesome this year for us.”

Heading into next season, the Bears will have Marshall back in the fold along with Bennett and the return of versatile running back Matt Forte. Chicago will also have a new head coach in Marc Trestman after the team parted ways with Lovie Smith.

The Bears will be heading in another direction next season with Trestman an offensive-minded head coach. Marshall, Forte, Bennett and Cutler all stand to benefit and may see a considerable boost in numbers next season while giving the Green Bay Packers a run for their money in the NFC North.
