With the inconsistent play of quarterback Case Keenum, many expected the Los Angeles Rams coaching staff to make preparations for the first overall in the 2016 NFL Draft, Jared Goff to replace him.
However, despite Keenum’s poor outing across the pond in Week 7, head coach Jeff Fisher reiterated he will be sticking with Keenum as the team’s starter. According to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report, the rookie still has a long way to go before being named the starter:
“Sources within the Rams organization still believe that Jared Goff is a long way from being ready to play this season,” Cole said. “The team plans to get extra practice time for him this week, but the biggest problem remains that Goff hasn’t mastered the ability to change plays at the line of scrimmage in order to handle blitzes and other defensive schemes. Until that changes, expect Goff to stay on the bench.”
The news comes much to the dismay of fans after watching the Rams lose three straight games. Prior to the start of the 2016 campaign, many projected Goff to be ready to go at this point in the season. However, Fisher and the rest of the coaching staff seem content on letting Keenum run the offense.
Los Angeles is currently on their bye week which gives them a chance to give Goff extra reps with the starters. At this point, only time will tell if the team’s risky gamble in this year’s draft will come to fruition.
