With the 2016 NFL season officially underway, fans across the league anxiously awaited the Super Bowl rematch between the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos. One of the biggest storylines surrounding this game was the starting debut of Broncos quarterback, Trevor Siemian.
However, it was revealed the Broncos had actually discussed a deal for another signal caller in the preseason to help provide some stability to their star-studded team. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, it was Los Angeles Rams quarterback, Case Keenum:

It is no secret that both teams have had their fair share of issues at the quarterback position. After nearly an entire season of mediocre play from Nick Foles, the Rams finally gave Keenum the start, who then subsequently led the team to a 3-1 record to close out the season.
Apparently, the small sample size was enough to catch the eye of general manager John Elway, whose team is fresh off a dominating Super Bowl win. With the departure of Peyton Manning to retirement and Brock Osweiler to the Houston Texans, the Broncos offense has been in a state of flux without a reliable signal caller.
However, given that the Rams re-signed Keenum to lead their offense while rookie Jared Goff continues to develop, Los Angeles was asking for worthy compensation. Ultimately, the deal fell through after Simien was able to earn the trust of Denver’s front office throughout the preseason.
While it is unclear as to how close the deal came to actually happening, it is interesting to see the Rams are not the only team aware of the stability Keenum brings to an offense.
