Matthew Stafford has enjoyed a resurgence since being traded to the Los Angeles Rams, reestablishing himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL and leading the franchise to new heights.

Stafford is coming off an MVP season in which he led the league in both passing yards (4,707) and passing touchdowns (46) while guiding the Rams to the NFC Championship Game.

Stafford has become synonymous with the no-look pass in the NFL, which is something most quarterbacks rarely attempt. The 38-year-old not only trusts his ability to make the pass, but his wide receivers getting in position to catch it as well.

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels highlighted Stafford’s unique skillset and praised him for having the confidence to attempt no-look passes.

“Matthew Stafford does it the best I’ve seen,” Daniels said during an appearance on NFL Network. “I try to practice it all the time. I don’t know how he does it. You gotta have a lot of cojones to be able to do it.”

Daniels added that he hasn’t tried to complete any no-look passes out of fear of one accidentally being thrown to a defender.

Stafford, meanwhile, has been in the NFL long enough to predict how defenses are going to play him and uses the no-look pass as a way to keep them off guard.

Rams’ quarterback plans for preseason opener

The Rams begin their preseason schedule on Saturday against the Kansas City Chiefs, and as expected, virtually all of their starters are going to rest.

That means the Rams will get an early look at their backup quarterbacks with Stafford on the sidelines.

Head coach Sean McVay confirmed that Ty Simpson will play against the Chiefs, but he hasn’t made a decision on Stetson Bennett yet.

All signs point to Bennett being Stafford’s primary backup this season. When Jimmy Garoppolo filled that role over the past two years, he never played during the preseason. A similar scenario could play out with Bennett in 2026.
