When the Los Angeles Rams selected Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, it was a move aimed for the future.
Simpson is not expected to make much of an impact next season with reigning MVP Matthew Stafford returning at quarterback, but it will still be an important first year for the 23-year-old.
Rams head coach Sean McVay detailed what Simpson should be focusing on during the team’s offseason program, via Sarah Barshop of ESPN:
“What does it look like to be able to communicate, especially as a quarterback?” McVay said. “How am I saying the plays? … You have to see plays when you’re saying them, otherwise you can’t call plays in this offense. … Practicing in the mirror, what does your voice inflection look like? How are you emphasizing certain things? How are you really being able to go through the mechanics of everything that happens before the snap? And then what’s my footwork? What’s my timing and rhythm?”
Although he is still relatively new to the Rams, Simpson has wasted no time making an excellent first impression on his teammates and coaches.
McVay previously raved about Simpson’s college tape, and several players have noted his strong work ethic during offseason workouts.
Stafford is also being mindful about the Rams’ future and has taken Simpson under his wing, realizing the importance of veteran players helping rookies make the transition to the NFL.
Even though he is unlikely to see much of the field this year, Simpson still has an opportunity to win the backup quarterback job during the preseason as the Rams do not plan to bring in a veteran signal-caller.
Rams believe CJ Daniels can make impact
With Stafford back at quarterback and a wide receiver core that includes Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, the Rams should have no problem putting up points next season.
L.A. believes they may have even gotten better offensively after trading up to select wide receiver CJ Daniels out of the University of Miami in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
Daniels should complement the rest of the group well as he had the lowest drop rate and second-highest contested catch rate over the past two NCAA seasons.
Daniels adds depth to a loaded Rams wide receiver room that includes Nacua, Adams, Jordan Whittington, Konata Mumpfield and Xavier Smith, among others.
