There is no secret that the Los Angeles Rams are all-in on going for a Super Bowl this year and the moves they have made this offseason are proof of that. Of course any team with Super Bowl aspirations needs to be strong in the trenches and one of the Rams’ key contributors, left guard Steve Avila, is eligible for a contract extension.
A second-round pick in 2023, Avila has been a starter for this team basically from day one and he will again be relied upon this season. While Avila is certainly hoping for an extension, he also remains focused on playing football and feels like he owes it to the Rams to be locked in, regardless of whether he gets one or not, via Wyatt Miller of theRams.com:
“I feel like everybody that’s up for extension is hoping to get one,” Avila said. “That’s definitely something I wish could happen. I try my best to stay the same every single year. I know for me, I’ve always improved every single year I’ve played football. I feel like I owe it all to the team to be the best version of myself. I feel like all that stuff will come when it does.”
This is exactly what you want to hear from players going into such an important season. Of course Avila wants an extension, as he should, but he also understands that it is all about the team and what is best for the Rams. He won’t let his individual goals distract from the team and that is something the entire Rams organization benefits from.
Matthew Stafford won the MVP and Kyren Williams totaled more than 1,500 scrimmage yards last season and neither of those things happen without the offensive line being on one accord and dominating the line of scrimmage. Avila hopes to get paid, and he should, but ensuring the Rams get over the hump and back to the Super Bowl trumps everything else and Avila is a prime example of embracing that mindset and belief.
Rams, Matthew Stafford making ‘significant progress’ on contract extension
Stafford is nearing the end of his career, but the Rams’ quarterback clearly has plenty left in the tank after his MVP 2025 season. Many believe the upcoming 2026 season could be his last, but that may not be the case as Stafford and the Rams have reportedly made ‘significant progress’ on a contract extension.
