The Los Angeles Rams just can’t seem to get over the hump against the Philadelphia Eagles as they blew a golden opportunity to knock off the reigning Super Bowl champions in Week 3.
The Rams blew a 19-point lead in the second half, but still had a chance to win late in the fourth as they got into field goal range trailing 27-26.
Joshua Karty was primed to seal the victory, but the Eagles front was able to block his field goal attempt. Jordan Davis then took the football down the other side for a touchdown and Los Angeles took home a devastating 33-27 loss.
It was the second blocked field goal of the afternoon and head coach Sean McVay credited Philadelphia’s interior linemen for making plays after watching the film and explaining what went wrong.
“If you’re looking at it from the kicking lens, over the left side next to the long snapper we gave up just a little bit of penetration. Two of their big guys that are excellent being able to get some momentum, get up underneath, get penetration and be able to get their hands up. On both of those kicks, we were just a little bit high with our pad level, didn’t necessarily execute with the techniques and the fundamentals that we’re capable of. They ended up making those plays and they do a great job. That’s a phase that they’ve always been strong with. They’ve always leaned into that. You go back to even when Fletcher Cox was there, he was a big time problem. Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis have done an excellent job of making their presence felt and it was unfortunate that that ended up occurring on two consecutive kicks. That would’ve been the difference in the game for us.”
Los Angeles was down their normal starting left guard in Steve Avila, but the team also saw Kevin Dotson exit the game. Beaux Limmer stepped in for Dotson, but was immediately abused on the interior by the Eagles front.
McVay and the Rams aren’t strangers to poor special teams play, but in this case there wasn’t much else they could do given the personnel. While McVay wasn’t willing to make excuses, it’s an issue the Rams need to get sorted out as soon as possible as other teams will attempts to do the same thing against them.
Kyren Williams finds silver lining in Rams loss to Eagles
Playing the defending champions up to the final possession is a sign the Rams are right there in terms of contention. Kyren Williams was disappointed that the team couldn’t come away with a win but he found a silver lining in the loss.
