The Los Angeles Rams may have picked up two victories to start the 2025 season, but they face their toughest challenge yet as they head on the road to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 3.
Like the Rams, the Eagles are also undefeated through two weeks and still look like the juggernaut that won Super Bowl LIX over the Kansas City Chiefs.
What makes Philadelphia so difficult to defend is their physicality up front coupled with the running games of Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley. However, the Eagles also have popularized the Tush Push, which has caused a commotion among the other teams.
In Week 2 against the Chiefs, it appeared as though officials missed multiple false state penalties against the Eagles on the Tush Push, which sparked another conversation. Head coach Sean McVay weighed in on the issue and acknowledged he and the team will have conversations with the league office ahead of the Week 3 matchup.
“Anytime that you see certain things, you have conversations with the league office to make sure you’re understanding, how is it officiated? How can we coach it? I did see some of those things last night and that’ll obviously be a big talking point because they’re such a damn good team and it’s such a successful play for them,” McVay said. “Those are conversations with the league office, but I’m sure they’ll have the same ones and operate within the confines of not getting a little bit of a rolling start before the ball is snapped.”
McVay previously spoke about the play in the offseason, saying he doesn’t wish to see it banned but admitted it doesn’t resemble football to him. McVay also cited health and safety concerns, which are valid given the player alignment on the play.
McVay has maintained that he doesn’t believe in banning a play like the Tush Push because one team is doing it better than everyone else, but he does raise a good point about the optics. McVay compared the Tush Push to a rugby scrum and it largely resembles that more than a normal NFL play.
The Tush Push might finally be on its way out if teams and coaches continue to bring it up, but for now McVay and defensive coordinator Chris Shula will need to be prepared for it come Sunday.
