The Los Angeles Rams have been without Matthew Stafford since the start of training camp due to an aggravated disk in his back.

The veteran quarterback received an epidural to treat the pain and also hasn’t practiced as the team tries to manage his workload.

Stafford appears to be turning a corner as he participated in a workout on Saturday and threw roughly 60 passes.

Rams head coach Sean McVay said the 37-year-old looked great and is expected to return for individual drills on Monday, via Stu Jackson of TheRams.com:

“It was awesome,” McVay said of the scheduled workout Stafford went through on Saturday, in which he estimated Stafford threw 68 passes. “He looked good. He threw the ball really well. There was no limitations in terms of the types of throws – deep, intermediate, short. We were moving the launch point. And he felt really good, and so looking forward to progressing him back into practice on Monday, but it was a good step in the right direction.”

Stafford has not been cleared to take part in team drills yet, but it is certainly encouraging that he will be on the field when the Rams resume practice this week.

Stafford is entering his 17th NFL season and expectations could not be higher after he led the Rams to the playoffs last year. L.A. was only a few plays away from potentially knocking off the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and advancing to the NFC Championship Game.

He completed 65.8% of his passes for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns in 16 games during the 2024 season.

With the two-time Pro Bowler limited to this point, Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett have been taking reps with the first team offense. Bennett threw for two touchdowns in the Rams’ 31-21 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday.

Matthew Stafford ranked No. 59 on NFL Top 100 for 2025 season

Matthew Stafford was ranked 59th on the NFL Top 100 list going into the 2025 season. He is one of four Rams players included in the rankings, along with Puka Nacua (No. 41), Jared Verse (No. 53) and Kyren Williams (No. 85).
