Davante Adams immediately became a target for the Los Angeles Rams and head coach Sean McVay once he was released by the New York Jets.

McVay recruited Adams heavily in free agency and it worked as the star receiver signed a two-year deal with the Rams.

While Adams has yet to officially step foot on the field for Los Angeles, he’s already been making an impact both on and off the field as a leader and mentor.

McVay has gotten a chance to get a better look at Adams the past couple of months and he compared him to Cooper Kupp and the way they understand the game of football.

“He’s special. He’s got just such a big picture understanding,” McVay said. “In a lot of instances, it reminds you of Cooper’s football acumen where these guys look at the game through the lens of a quarterback. They understand coverage contours. They understand timing, rhythm, route distribution and there’s a lot of experience and then there’s an understanding of the craft in and of itself with how you work edges, how you separate, how you’re able to try to be able to regain leverage even if you’re in an unfavorable spot.”

McVay also praised Adams for his approach in the meeting rooms with the offensive coaches.

“I’m not always in their meeting rooms, but when I am, I’m so impressed but then when you hear Eric Yarber and Nate Scheelhaase and Rob Calabrese just talk about his ability to communicate, his understanding of how to communicate in a clear way that guys can digest and understanding and then ultimately translate it. It’s some special stuff. I’m glad he doesn’t want to coach because he’d take our jobs,” McVay admitted.

Both Adams and Kupp aren’t necessarily touted as burners or the most athletic players, but their understanding of the details and their football IQ make them nearly impossible to defend one on one.

Adams himself noted that he’s been feeling rejuvenated since joining the Rams and so far the early returns have been positive. Even though Adams is on the tail end of his prime, he remains one of the best separators in the league and should be a perfect complement to Puka Nacua this upcoming season.

Puka Nacua reveals advice from Davante Adams

Puka Nacua has gotten a chance to learn from some of the smartest people in football and gets another incredible resource in Davante Adams. Adams has already been in Nacua’s ear as the latter explained he received advice on how to be a better receiver at the line of scrimmage.
