Matthew Stafford’s future with the Los Angeles Rams remains up in the air as they continue to work through his contract situation.
Stafford has been meeting with other teams to gauge what he would be worth on the open market and the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Giants seem to be the teams showing the most interest in him.
While they may be willing to give him the $50 million per season he is looking forward, their rosters are nowhere near as strong as the Rams’. If Stafford wants to compete for more Super Bowls, the Rams give him the best chance to do that. Plus, he would not have to uproot his family once again and move away from Los Angeles where they are comfortable.
With all of that being the case, it appears that Stafford returning to the Rams is looking more and more likely, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network:
From last night: A Matthew Stafford decision looms, and his return to the #Rams feels more likely to those involved. Nothing final. But clearly more likely than a few days ago when it appeared he was set to leave. https://t.co/3BXoreDY2I

Things appeared to be trending in the wrong direction on Thursday with reports indicating talks with the Raiders were picking up steam. According to Peter Schrager of NFL Network though, Rams head coach Sean McVay has been talking with Stafford and the team is expected to meet with him again on Friday:
“There have been a lot of conversations in the last 24 hours between Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford directly. There is expected to be another conversation today. I would expect the more conversations they have – and it’s the two of them – It’s not the agent. It’s the quarterback and the coach, and the more they can talk and get on the same ground, the better chance it is that Matthew Stafford returns to the L.A. Rams.”
The Rams keeping Stafford is clearly in the best interest of both parties, it’s just a matter of if they can find common ground on a new contract. The organization is unlikely to give him the $50 million he is looking for, but all indications are the 37-year-old would be willing to take less than that to stay with the Rams, it’s just a matter of how low he is willing to go.
Sean McVay ‘adamant’ about Rams keeping Matthew Stafford
Sean McVay speaking with Matthew Stafford isn’t surprising as recent reports have indicating that he is ‘adamant’ about the Rams keeping their franchise quarterback.
