Each year since the Los Angeles Rams won Super Bowl LVI in early 2022, there has been plenty of speculation that head coach Sean McVay could legitimately consider retirement from coaching in order to become a TV analyst.
McVay has been open about the fact that he considered this path, but ultimately decided to stick with the Rams through a rebuilding 2022 season and beyond.
Now in 2023, the Rams are ahead of schedule. This season was seen a franchise reset, both financially and in the draft, that would likely lead to a poor record. L.A. was not expected to do anything of note this season and were considered one of the top contenders to land the No. 1 pick. But McVay’s team has stunned many by compiling nine wins and clinching a playoff berth before Week 18 of the regular season.
McVay’s last win — a nail-biter over the New York Giants to help clinch a postseason berth — gave him 69 career victories in 114 games with the Rams, tying him for second among Rams coaches with Chuck Knox. He sits just six wins behind John Robinson for the franchise record, meaning he would need to return in 2024 to be within striking distance.

Depending on what happens in Week 18, McVay would need six or seven wins next season to become the Rams’ all-time wins leader for coaches, a win total he has surpassed in six of seven seasons at the helm of the Rams. But just as importantly, McVay openly stated he will be the Rams coach in 2024, meaning L.A. won’t enter the offseason with any uncertainty about their goals in 2024.
The Rams are looking to win, and after they outperformed expectations in 2023 while also resetting their books and draft picks as anticipated, they are in a great position to contend next season. And with McVay leading the way, nothing is out of the realm of possibility.
Sean McVay appreciated Steelers’ help
In order for the Rams to clinch a postseason berth in Week 17 and have a stress-free Week 18, they needed the Pittsburgh Steelers to travel to the West Coast and defeat the Seattle Seahawks. It was a back-and-forth chippy battle, but the Steelers ultimately won and gave the Rams their place in the Playoffs.
McVay said he appreciates the work put in by the Steelers to help the Rams, calling it a nice Christmas gift from head coach Mike Tomlin and company.
