The Los Angeles Rams might struggle to prevent opposing teams from scoring during the 2023 season as they’ve seen several important pieces of their defense leave in the offseason.
Not only did they release Bobby Wagner and Leonard Floyd, but the Rams also traded Jalen Ramsey to the Miami Dolphins. Aside from the big names, Los Angeles has also seen rotational pieces like Nick Scott and Greg Gaines depart in free agency.
With the lack of defensive talent on the roster, Sean McVay and the organization are likely banking on their offense to carry them to victory. To that end, it sounds like they’re focused on that side of the field as they’ve reportedly kept in contact with free agent receiver Odell Beckham Jr. via Jim Trotter of NFL Network:
“I’ve been told Odell has stayed in regular contact with Matthew Stafford, as well as Cooper Kupp. And the GM Les Snead has remained in regular contact with Odell’s agent… We know the Rams are not going to be big spenders in free agency this offseason, but if by chance Odell is willing to take a reasonable deal and let’s say, even a one-year deal, re-establish himself then get back out on the open market, this would seem to be a good spot knowing he had so much synergy with Matthew Stafford, as well as with Sean McVay in terms of play calling and play design. It’s just something to watch here that the Rams have not ruled out the possibility of Odell returning to Los Angeles.”
It would be tricky for Los Angeles to sign Beckham in free agency as they do not have much cap space even after all the moves they’ve made. Beckham has also been insistent on getting his money despite missing all of the 2022 season due to the torn ACL he suffered in Super Bowl LVI.
So far, several teams have been in contact with the receiver throughout free agency, though a signing doesn’t appear imminent. The longer Beckham goes unsigned, the more it works in L.A.’s favor though they might need to make a couple more moves to get to a number that makes sense for his services.
Fans would love the idea of Beckham returning to the Rams considering how much he contributed to their Super Bowl run, but as of now, it remains to be seen if the two sides can come to an agreement.
