The Los Angeles Rams had about as bad of a season as any defending Super Bowl Champion has ever had, finishing just 5-12 with injuries destroying the roster. But with the season over, the focus now goes toward the future of a couple of extremely important people within the organization, namely head coach Sean McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford.
McVay recently discussed his future and is unclear about what he intends to do, noting that he needs some time to figure out his next moves. Stafford, on the other hand, knows exactly what his intentions are.
Stafford spoke with Rams reporter Stu Jackson and made it clear that he plans on using the offseason to get healthy and be ready to go next season:
“Feel the same way,” Stafford said, when asked where he was at with that conversation. “I’m heading into the offseason, got a chance to be pretty darn healthy and continue to try to get to feeling as good as I can feel, and then get ready to go again next year.”
Stafford has no designs on hanging it up this offseason and plans to be leading the way for the Rams next season. Furthermore, the Rams’ signal-caller is looking forward to being able to participate in offseason workouts and team activities that he hasn’t been able to do the last couple of years:
“I had obviously the thumb a couple years ago, and then elbow stuff that I wasn’t able to really participate in a whole lot of stuff when it comes to throwing the football for a long time,” Stafford said. “So to be able to do that at a way more regular pace, which is exciting for me as a player, that’s what I want to do. I want to be out there, I want to be able to throw and be a part of the team and do all that kind of stuff, so that’s exciting for me.”
This was obviously a season to forget for Stafford and the Rams as a whole, but the quarterback is ready to put all of that behind him and move forward. Injuries to him, Cooper Kupp and Aaron Donald, not to mention the offensive line, truly made this season an impossible one.
But Stafford sounds motivated to show that this season was an anomaly and lead the Rams right back amongst the NFL’s elite and continue to compete for more Super Bowls.
