The Los Angeles Rams were able to secure a championship in Super Bowl LVI largely on the back of quarterback Matthew Stafford. In his first year with the Rams — after 12 seasons with the Detroit Lions — he cemented himself as one of the league’s best QBs as they climbed towards a championship.
Stafford was traded from the Lions to the Rams during the 2021 offseason in exchange for QB Jared Goff, two first-round picks and a third-round pick, a price many called an overpay for a player of Stafford’s caliber. Instead, he proved the deal to be fully worthwhile in Year 1.
And while Stafford seems to be plenty happy in his new home with the Rams, he’ll always be grateful for the time he spent with the Lions and the connections he built in the Detroit community.
He joked about this circumstance in a new AT&T commercial that premiered during the ongoing March Madness Men’s and Women’s college basketball national championships, via Andrew Siciliano of NFL Network:

Stafford shows a bit of his underrated sense of humor during this commercial. When told to promote the ability to trade in an old phone for a new one, Stafford monologues about how even though trading for a new phone after 12 years might seem difficult, it may be the best thing for him and for the phone.
While the commercial is clearly done in a comedic light, Stafford uses the opportunity to show his appreciation for the city of Detroit and everything that Stafford built during his 12 seasons with the Lions.
It was well-known at the time that both sides needed to move forward without one another, and the Rams trade served as a win-win for all three parties. The Lions got to reset with a younger QB, Stafford got a fresh start with a team ready to win, and the Rams got their long-sought-after Pro Bowl-level quarterback.
Allen Robinson agrees to three-year deal with Rams
The Rams clearly did not get complacent after winning the Super Bowl, as they went out and got Stafford some more help on the offensive end. This came in the form of one of the best wide receivers on the market, Allen Robinson.
Robinson reportedly agreed to a three-year deal with the Rams after many years with the Chicago Bears and their revolving door of quarterbacks.
