The Los Angeles Rams were among the teams to have a host of players utilizing the NFL’s decision to loosen restrictions on jersey numbers for running backs, defensive backs, wide receivers and tight ends. However, this has somehow limited the options for quarterback John Wolford.
Wolford was already forced to switch from No. 9 due to the arrival of former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford this offseason. He then had to move on from No. 3 now that running back Cam Akers is going back to his old number.
As a result, Wolford is now set to don the No. 13 going into the 2021 NFL season. It should go without saying that this number carries some significance within the franchise since it was worn by Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner.
Fortunately, Warner has no issue with Wolford’s jersey number and even gave him his blessing to wear it, he revealed on Twitter:

Warner’s comments are indicative of his appreciation for another quarterback trying to make a name for himself. After all, there was a time when he had been considered an overlooked backup before eventually leading the Rams to Super Bowl glory and establishing himself as a league MVP.
Wolford managed to take full advantage of his opportunity by filling in for an injured Jared Goff to help the Rams secure a playoff spot with a win over the Arizona Cardinals last season. He overcame a rough start by completing 22-of-38 passes for 231 yards to go along with 56 rushing yards.
Wolford will now have a chance to learn from a quarterback of Stafford’s caliber as L.A. looks to take that next step into Super Bowl contention. While the hierarchy under center is more clear-cut than ever, his experience and familiarity with the offense should provide head coach Sean McVay with some peace of mind.
