The Los Angeles Rams welcomed the winless New York Giants to town in Week 4 in what was supposed to be a “great right” game after a tough loss to the Buffalo Bills. Instead, it was a struggle all day for the Rams, although they were able to hang on for the 17-9 victory to improve to 3-1 on the year.
The Rams have had a high-powered offense so far this season, but they went quiet against the Giants, forcing the defense to carry the load, and they were up to the task.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Rams had a season-high five sacks, keeping the Giants out of the end zone and limiting them to three field goals.
With the team leading 17-9 late in the fourth quarter, cornerback Darious Williams came up with an interception of Daniel Jones to seal the victory.
After the game, Rams head coach Sean McVay gave credit to his defense for the win, via Stu Jackson of TheRams.com:
“We just couldn’t get into a rhythm offensively, but defense did a great job,” Rams head coach Sean McVay said. “You win as a team, and I thought they made enough plays to be able to win.”
As is normally the case, Rams star Aaron Donald had a strong day. He only had two total tackles but accounted for 0.5 sacks and 0.5 tackles for loss. He was in the backfield all day and forced seven quarterback pressures, which was the fourth-most in the league in Week 4.
His teammates made some big plays as well though as he gave praise to them:
“We have 11 guys on the field that at any time one of these guys can make a big play, make a game changing play, (so) you tend to continue to close out games and make big plays like that when we need it,” Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald said.
In four weeks this season, the Rams have shown the ability to be great on both the offensive side and defensive side of the ball. They have yet to put together a complete performance though, so hopefully they can find their form with some difficult matchups on the horizon.
