The Los Angeles Rams’ offense has been rolling to start the season, most recently putting up 37 points in an easy win over the Philadelphia Eagles to move to 2-0 on the season.
Jared Goff was basically doing whatever he wanted to in the passing game, finding open receivers all game. Whenever the Rams were in the red zone, it was tight end Tyler Higbee that was open as he had a career day, hauling in three touchdowns and five receptions for 54 yards.
Higbee became the first Rams player since Torry Holt in 2006 to have three touchdown catches in a game, making his mark in franchise history.
After the game, Higbee discussed how he was able to get open all day, via Stu Jackson of TheRams.com:
“It just happened to work like that,” Higbee told reporters during his postgame video conference from Lincoln Financial Field. “Not thinking too much of it, just trying to do my job. Ball found me today and I tried to capitalize on those opportunities. Shoutout Torry Holt, though.”
Higbee’s final touchdown of the day was a wide-open 28-yard pass down the sidelines where Goff hit him in stride. As soon as Higbee saw the play call from Sean McVay, he knew he had a chance at a hat trick:
“When he made the play call and I heard the play, I said, ‘Oh, this might be six,'” said Higbee, who celebrated the score with an opera-like bow to the empty stands. “Then it happened to be number three. You’re kind of running out of celebrations there and trying to play off the no crowd, and yeah, it was exciting.”
Since the second half of last season, Higbee has developed into one of the best and most underrated tight ends in football. He and Goff have developed some special chemistry, which has unlocked another layer to the Rams’ offense that wasn’t previously there.
They will look to keep that connection going in Week 3 when the Rams travel across the country again to face off against a tough Buffalo Bills defense.
