Despite their 3-2 record and back-to-back losses, the Los Angeles Rams are continuing to remain positive about their outlook for the rest of the season.
Although the Rams’ offense has finally gotten going the last two weeks, those two losses rear their ugly head. Furthermore, the losses seem more meaningful considering a win was well within the team’s reach during both games.
Jared Goff had perhaps his best game of the season on Thursday Night Football in the 30-29 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. While they didn’t get the job done to win the game, Goff drove the team down the field and put them in a position for a game-winning field goal attempt, which Greg Zuerlein missed.
So despite the loss, Goff feels that the offense is finding their groove, via Lindsey Thiry of ESPN:
“We’re rolling on offense in most of the second half. Had some things that didn’t go our way where we didn’t finish drives,” Goff said. “But we were moving the ball really well.”
Goff is certainly not wrong. The Rams offense has been great in the second half of games, while nearly non-existent during the first quarter.
Much of the Rams offense woes have fallen on Goff, who has had his ups and downs so far this season after signing a contract extension. Goff already has seven interceptions and four fumbles on the season, which is far too many turnovers.
Another interesting fold in the Rams offense is the lack of contributions from Todd Gurley. Through five games, the All-Pro has totaled only 270 rushing yards, which is 145 fewer than his five-game total from last year. His five touchdowns this year are just shy of his seven touchdowns from a year ago as well.
Interestingly enough, Gurley has only rushed 64 times this season as compared to his 101 rushing attempts at this point last year. Although the Rams have said they would look to him more often and that he was not being affected by injuries, it seems something has certainly changed in his game.
Despite their mixed play on offense, the Rams have still managed to earn a few wins and climb back into games they should have been blown out of. Although the numbers look good, it still seems there is work to be done and it’s safe to say that Goff and head coach Sean McVay won’t rest until improvements are shown.
