The Los Angeles Rams may have maintained their undefeated start to the 2018 NFL season in Week 5. However, Ndamukong Suh acknowledged that their defense has struggled mightily over the last few weeks.
The Seattle Seahawks had their way with the Rams’ front seven last week. According to Cameron DaSilva of Rams Wire, their inability to stop the run did not sit well with Suh:
“Terrible, without question, because of 191 yards. I can’t think back to many times of defenses that I’ve been a part of that have [given up] 191 yards, let alone many times over 100,” Suh said Thursday. “Because I’ve been a part of some great defenses where we’ve allowed maybe one team get close to 100, or over 100, so that’s what I pride myself on.”
Suh’s comments should come as no surprise. Although his sack numbers have dipped in recent years, he has always been considered one of the premier run-stuffers in the NFL. Unfortunately, that has not been the case of late.
The defense got off to a hot start to the season. They allowed just 12.0 points per game and forced six takeaways during the first three games. However, they have now surrendered 63 points over the last two weeks while forcing just one takeaway. Although this group has not played well as a whole, it is no secret that their issues start with their failure to stop the run.
Only three teams have allowed more yards per rush than Los Angeles this season (5.0). Their struggles are even more concerning this week versus the Denver Broncos. Denver boasts one of the most promising, young backfield duos in the league with Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman. Lindsay and Freeman have led the NFL’s third-best rushing attack thus far this season with 137.0 yards per game. Needless to say, they will look to exploit the Rams porous defense at home this Sunday.
