Seven NFL teams parted ways with their head coaches this week leaving seven vacancies at those positions and much speculation surrounding the candidates to fill void.
The one head coach fired and immediately hired was Andy Reid formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles. It was no secret that Reid was on his way out in Philadelphia after two consecutive seasons, but with the longtime Eagles coach so well regarded and respected around the league it wasn’t long before his phone was ringing off the hook with job offers.
The first team that was thought to swoop up Reid following his firing by the Eagles was the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals were highly motivated in terms of courting Reid, but weren’t quick enough with the Kansas City Chiefs bringing in Reid to talk about a deal.
With Reid officially off the table after signing with the Chiefs, the coaching search continues for six other teams in the league with plenty of big names circulating as possible candidates. One of the most successful and intriguing candidate is former Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren.
Holmgren’s short stint with the Browns was a forgettable one, but it appears he’s not done with football just yet. The former Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks head coach has let it be known that he’s willing to listen to offers according to ESPN’s Ed Werder:
Former Super Bowl-winning coach Mike Holmgren is willing to discuss returning to the sidelines if some of the seven teams that fired head coaches Monday have interest.
“If anyone is interested, I’ll listen,” said Holmgren, who indicated he will not aggressively pursue job openings.
During his time as an NFL head coach, Holmgren won a Super Bowl with the Packers in 1997 and led the Seahawks to the Super Bowl as NFC champions back in 2005.
There’s no question that Holmgren will get some considerable interest from the six teams currently looking for a new head coach, but it remains to be seen if he’ll actually be back on the sidelines in 2013.
