Rams News: Los Angeles Releases Cornerback Kayvon Webster

the Los Angeles Rams have made one blockbuster deal after another this offseason. Unfortunately, they have now suffered their first casualty amidst all the recent moves.

They kickstarted the offseason with the acquisition of cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib. As a result, they have released cornerback Kayvon Webster, per ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter:

Rams released veteran CB Kayvon Webster, per source. Added some CBs, and now subtract one.

The move may come as a bit of a surprise considering he was one of their most prized additions last offseason. He emerged as an immediate starter and became a dependable option despite dealing with a lingering shoulder injury all year. However, his season was cut short after suffering a torn Achilles in early December.

Needless to say, the Rams have since found viable replacements with the All-Pro pairing of Peters and Talib. They also managed to re-sign their bonafide slot cornerback in Nickell Robey-Coleman which seemingly gave Los Angeles little reason to pay extra for a backup cornerback. The Rams are expected to save upwards of $3.5 million in cap space with his release. Although they have not ruled out the prospect of bringing him back on a discount, it is highly unlikely that he will want to re-sign with the team that just cut him after an injury.

Regardless, the Rams are still in great shape in the secondary. Furthermore, they will be able to use the extra money to help fill their many areas of need this offseason. The first item on their list, of course, will be reaching a monster deal with defensive tackle Aaron Donald. Outside of that, Los Angeles must fill their huge void at the linebacker position. Although they are expected to address this need through the 2018 NFL Draft, adding some potential experience to the group beforehand would certainly help the process.
