Among the notable performances in the Los Angeles 2017 NFL season opener, cornerback Trumaine Johnson undoubtedly topped them all. With All-Pro Aaron Donald out Week 1 versus the Indianapolis Colts, the Rams defense was going to need one of their key members to step up as a playmaker.
The veteran Johnson did not disappoint after finishing the day with a pick-six, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. His performance was good enough to earn him NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors:

It was an eventful offseason for Johnson after failing to agree with the Rams on a long-term contract. His second consecutive franchise tag makes him the highest-paid corner in the NFL this season. As a result, there were high expectations for him heading into the year.
Regardless, he has maintained a positive mindset throughout camp and was even elected as a defensive team captain. His presence has helped facilitate this secondary group as the team’s facilitators.As the team’s no. 1 corner
There has been speculation that Los Angeles may use the season to see how well Johnson fits into defensive coordinator Wade Phillips’ scheme. Needless to say, if he continues to perform at a high level, the Rams will be obligated to keep Johnson around for the long-haul.
